HELP!!!!

Should I buy the above-referenced gizmo? They want nearly $650.00 (including tax) for it. That's with a "lifetime subscription" to the updating service which, apparently, is indispensible if you're going to get the gadget to begin with.

Oh, it's a High-Definition TiVo (20 hrs. of hd or 180 hrs of regular tv).

All this just so I can watch the upcoming season of "Lost" within 48 hours of the broadcast. That's not completely true, there might be one or two other shows I'd "time shift" with it.

I'm only thinking about this because a) my 20 year old Panasonic S-VHS recorder (which cost a grand when IT was new) finally died a horrible death and b) I'm pretty certain there's no point in investing any more money in VHS technology.

So, what do you folks think? Blow the big $$$$'s and finally get with the 21st Century program here... or continue to be my old, Luddite self, trudging along the canal paths of 17th century technology?

I await YOUR decision.

Thank yew.

You should definitely get a Tivo!! It doesn't need to be that expensive tho. I bought mine online from Tivo for $99, reconditioned and it has worked great for several years. My daughter said it would be life changing and it definitely is. I never watch live TV and never watch commercials, it fast forwards so fast. Tivo is great!

Well, I've carefully considered all of your comments (well, yours, Norma) and I've decided to bite the bullet and buy the TiVo (HD with lifetime subscription).

And, because I've procrastinated so long about this, I HAD to have it shipped via Overnight Express (a mere additional $45.00).

Anyway, the deed is done and, with any luck, I'll be TiVoing the entire inaugural on Tuesday and recording the 1st episode of the new season of "Lost" next week, too.

Hey... I'm worth it!

Good for you, you won't be sorry. I just checked my records and my 80hour TiVo was purchased in Mar 2007for $67.95, what a deal. You never have to worry about the tape running out as in VCR and Season Pass records every episode of your choice. The best invention since TV.

Bless your heart, of course you deserve it! "Go for it!" {family joke. That's what my son said when I asked him if I ought to shack up with the guy I later married.}

What a wonderfully understanding son you have, ~Sil!

I'm starting to get excited about this whole thing now.... I wish I were home and that I'd ordered it yesterday.

Drunks. We want what we want when we want it. And not a moment later.

I've had my Tivo for 4 years and can't imagine life without it. One tip my brother gave me is if you don't want to time shift for days, you can start a show 20 minutes in and as you skip the commercials, you'll end watching it the same time the show ends - but in way less time.

My struggle is whether to get the HD tivo now that I have an HD tv and cable box. I'd need the bigger one because we record a lot (every Ellen for instance which we watch months later sometimes but are perfect after a long day and short attention span).

Mine's an older box so I can only watch one show at a time which is another reason the new HD box intrigues me.

Maybe I should pay off the new laptop before doing this but it's on the list.

Thanks for doing your part to help the economy.

p.s. Susan, how in G-d's name did you find me over here?

Well, I'm 2 days late and you've already made your decision, but I knew you'd buy it anyway. I don't have TIVO, I have Comcast's DVR. I have often wished for TIVO instead but I'm happy with what I have, though my options are more limited.

I think it's pretty clear that if I want to drag my readers out of the woodwork all I have to do is post some technology thingie, with graphics.

Ya know, I thought about going the DVR route but due to my home-life situation it's nearly impossible. No, the best thing was to buy the equipment outright. That way, it's portable no matter where I end up.
