Strange poll, I voted for Purgatory. Couldn't get the newest comments box to open, guess it's tired. The fundies are going to go bat-guano about that article. My Pentecostal relatives are sure that there is a massive conspiracy by the left-wing, Godless pinkos to crush all the 'good Christians.' I keep telling them that they have nothing to worry about if they are really 'born-again' but they seem to want to quit waiting for Jesus and take on world-domination themselves. Yeah, I know, they sound like Sarah Palin. That seems to be her agenda, too. Reminds me of "The Handmaid's Tale." Creepy!
I voted for "Heaven - in the cheap seats" because I distinctly remembering some nun actually having the nerve to announce that to us. Their hearts may have been in the right places, but their theology definitely needed work.
Interestingly enough, yesterday's cover story in the NYTimes Magazine was all about how American Christianity is going to be transformed by African Fundamentalism.
Unfortunately, we live in "interesting times."
And your reference to "The Handmaid's Tale" sent shivers up my spine because I think we're a very fragile democracy, always on the verge of becoming theocratic.
